GCC Welding Program is an in demand CTE program. Students learn basic & advanced principles & practice application of welding procedures toward entry to mid-level positions in industry. Opportunities in sectors like manufacturing, construction, aerospace, & military in LA Region give our students opportunities for employment. We offer AS Major & Certificate of Achievement in Occupational Welding (Combination Welder). Our shop/classroom/lab for welding is small by many standards and our workstations are dated & small. Currently, we have only 10 ARC/MIG stations, 9 Oxyacetylene stations & 6 TIG stations. One or two are expected to be down due to repairs soon. Half of our machines are outdated. Our welding shop also houses a plasma cutter, flame cutter, & heat treating oven (use in our metallurgy class). Our ventilation systems are poor & additional air conditioning is warranted. Welding enrollment is restricted by the limited capacity in the current lab & classroom facility. It is the intent to expand the program by more offerings & eventually moving to a larger facility. This facility is needed for additional floor space, as well as for equipment & supplies to enhance the program. In addition to curriculum needed to become entry level welders, our students have opportunity to receive 3rd party certifications from American Welding Society in GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding), FCAW(Flux-Core Arc Welding), SMAW(Shield Metal Arc Welding) & GMAW(Gas Metal Arc Welding). LA Dept. of Building & Safety can also issue certificate in Structural Steel, & Light Gauge Steel. Certifications through Accurate Weld Testing Lab, Huntington Beach, CA. Having a lab tech in the manufacturing labs will support student success efforts.
